  • Day 9

Had a very long hot ride to Nashville. There was so much going on around us between road construction and increased congestion because of it, getting around was a little tense at times. In spite of it all we got to the new Grand ol Oprey in opreyland took a few pictures then headed for the old one. That’s when the traffic and road construction really kicked in. But once again we conquered the downtown dragon and arrived at the old one. A beautiful old building totally restored, and oozing with history and tradition. How many careers were launched from there we probably never know. After pictures we hit the road for Memphis, stopping in Dickson to get some sleep

  • Day 8

Today we went to Atlanta, Georgia to find the shop that restores Mini Coopers into hot rods. Apparently with a few frame and front end modifications along with a supped up v-6 these things can really move out. Unfortunately we could not find it after a couple hours even with the help of some locals so we stopped the search and headed for Nashville,Tenn after spending the night at Acworth, Ga.

  • Day 7

This morning got up and headed back to the Park Way. After riding for awhile someone told us about a stretch of road farther south off the Park Way called the TAIL 0F THE DRAGON. This stretch of road has over 300 turns in 11 mi. People come all over the world to ride or drive this section of highway. It was absolutely one incredible experience. As you go through it’s as though the road just moves under you as you just sail through.  If I make it out to be easy it’s not, I just took it easy and moved with road feeling every curve as we went. On our way up to the dragon we met a kid named Alex who had just come down from there. When we told him we were going up he said he would show us how to get there. While we were riding up Alex stood up on his seat turned around and took a picture of the four of us riding behind him. It was unreal. Then he turned around sat back down.

  • Day 6

Left this morning and headed out for Atlanta Ga. Rode all day including a long stretch on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

A spectacular ride, one curve after another, almost like riding around waves in the ocean. I guess this high way goes all the way through the Carolinas. After being on the road from  8am to 6:30 pm we were ready to take it in for the night. I’m tired.

  • Day 5

After a very emotionally charged night and getting to bed late, the morning came way to fast. The first maintenance on the bikes was done and we are on our way to our next stop Nashville,Tenn after spending the night in Covington, Virginia.

  • Day 4

Arrived in Millstone today. As we went through town we pulled over at a carwash to talk over what we were going to do. There was a guy washing his car. As he left we said hi, he said hi and he was on his way. On the way back into town we stopped at a little gun shop (go figure) to check it out and this guy shows up there. When we get outside and get to talking and introduce our selves, He tells us his name is Dana Starcher. And after throwing out a few names it turns out, He is our cousin. We talked with him for awhile got a couple of pictures together. Told him about our web site and he is going to have his girlfriend pull it up to what we’re up to. Then we had lunch at the café and she waited on us we all joked back and forth then headed for the homestead. As we pulled up to the house a guy was working on his car and a lady standing next to him. We parked introduced ourselves and it seemed like things just flowed from there. They offered a great deal of information, let us hang around as long as we wanted. We talked and had a cigar and only wonder what has childhood must have been like. As impoverished as it might have been, there was a richness which no one could deny. My heart breaks for Him even more after seeing where he came from, as to what evil could befall him to never want to go back or even share his family with us. He had to have his reasons, I will have to trust that it was just the way it had to be.

  • Day 3

Arrived in W.Virginia today. The scenery is unreal. Bob was right about what everything looks like. Everywhere you look it’s like a post card. People are incredibly friendly and amazed at what we’re doing. It’s like a blank spot in our memory dealing with Dad’s keeping his childhood a mystery giving us only glimpses occasionally by way of a funny story, or to teach us some life lesson  filtered through his simple hillbilly logic. Which you could seldom argue with. Looking forward to seeing the homestead tomorrow.

  • Day 2

Well we headed out from Toledo and are officially on our way. We went to Akron and found the house Dad had on his enlistment papers. It was amazing looking at that house and wondering what his life was like.  Who his friends where, did he have neighbors over for picnics etc.

As mysterious as dad’s childhood was It’s both fun and curiosity that moves me to find things out. We will probably never find out all we’d like know, but for now it’s journey that’s the reward not the treasure along the way.

  • Day 1

Well here we go. As I get a little more oriented to this bike I think I’ll do just fine. A little rest is going to go a long way after our trip here,  Look forward to getting going in the morning.
